The explosion that occurred on the fourth of August 2020 in Beirut was by far the largest explosion caused by ammonium nitrate worldwide in the last 20 years, as almost 2,500 metric tons of this inorganic chemical detonated. To put this into perspective, the second largest explosion of this kind during this period took place five years before in Tianjin, China, when nitrocellulose caught fire and spread to an illegal 726 metric ton-storage of ammonium nitrate.
