South Africa: sales of bananas 2000-2019

As of 2018/19, the preliminary sales volume of bananas in local markets from South Africa increased to roughly 249.5 thousand metric tons, from 241.2 thousand metric tons in the previous year. Bananas are the largest contributor to sales in the domestic market of fruits. Since 2000, local sales have variated, following similar fluctuations in the production volume of bananas. Several drops in the sales were registered along the period, as in 2002/03 and 2003/04, with an aggregate decline of 33.6 percent. The drops were associated with decreases in bananas production, along with the growth of informal markets sales, and retailers, processors, and wholesales receiving the bananas through direct sales.
