In a 2020 study, communication equipment global value chains overall shock exposure was found to be the highest. The results for different types of shocks vary. For instance, semiconductors and components global value chains' exposure to shocks arising from trade disputes was estimated to be the largest.
Global value chains' exposure to shocks as of 2020, by type of shocks*
The table is a descriptive one demonstrating exposure but not mitigation strategies.
Rank of exposure varies between less and more exposed, with the first rank being equal to the most exposed to shocks. The values have been derived depending on geographic footprint and factors of production. Pandemic values are developed taking into account geographic footprint in regions with high vulnerability to epidemics. Large-scale cyber attack values take into account knowledge intensity, capital intensity, degree of digitization and presence in geographies Geophysical event risk exposure depend on value chains' footprint and capital intensity in regions or geographies that are prone to natural disasters Heat stress values are derived from values chains' exposure in region with high heat and humidity, labor intensity, and relative share of outdoor work. Flooding rank of exposure depends on the footprint of value chains in geographies vulnerable to flooding. Trade disputes rank exposure are derived considering trade intensity and product complexity, which is a proxy value for national security relevance and substitutability of products.
