In 2020, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted the tourism industry across the globe. In Portugal, the impact of the pandemic can be seen in the sharp decline in tourist overnight stays in 2020 over the previous year. The number of international tourist overnight stays in the Algarve region dropped from roughly 16 million in 2019 to about 4.1 million in 2020. The number of domestic overnight stays also went down in 2020, decreasing by 1.2 million over 2019.
