Domestic travel was responsible for the highest number of visitors in Madeira in 2023. Overall, almost 476,000 Portuguese tourists visited the archipelago. Madeira is an autonomous region of Portugal made up of two islands: Madeira and Porto Santo. The top source market for international visitors in the region that year was the United Kingdom, which accounted for approximately 335,000 tourists.

Madeira was the fourth most visited Portuguese region in 2023, welcoming about 1.53 million overnight foreign tourists. For their trips, tourists could choose different type of hotels: from budget-friendly to luxury options. And the region captivated its visitors: in 2022, the archipelago registered the highest average length of stay in the entire country.

Apart from attracting millions of European tourists annually, the country is also a popular destination for Brazilians and U.S. Americans. Spain has been the favorite international travel destination among Portuguese nationals for years. In 2022, more than a million overnight trips were made by tourists from Portugal in the neighboring country. Leisure was the main driver for such trips, as suggested by the distribution of travel reasons for outbound trips from Portugal: while more than 1.7 million of these journeys were carried out for recreation or personal motives, less than 400.000 involved business purposes.
