Number of tourists to the Algarve 2023, by country of origin
The Portuguese region of the Algarve, notorious for its natural coastal beauty, received 1.4 million domestic travelers in 2023. The United Kingdom accounted for the highest number of international visitors in this region, with more than 1.1 million in total. Germany was placed third by a large margin, as it was responsible for just 368,000 visitors.
The Algarve is a booming tourist market in Portugal
The Algarve demonstrates particular tendencies regarding tourism, as its visitors are not completely aligned with the most prominent tourists in the rest of Portugal. In 2023, Spain, and not the United Kingdom, was the leading country of origin among international visitors in Portugal, with almost 2.4 million. The British came second and were followed by the United States, with two million visitors. In the same year, the Algarve recorded over 5.1 million tourists, the highest value ever registered in the region. In 2023, international tourists also set a new record, with 3.7 million, and, by July 2024, they amounted to 1.3 million.
The Algarve as an option for long overnight stays in Portugal
The Algarve has been one of the most visited regions of Portugal for years. Usually only surpassed by the country’s capital, in 2023 it was also transcended by Northern Portugal, even if just by a small margin. The North received 3.8 million visitors that year, while Lisbon outshone every other region of the country, with almost 6.5 million tourists. However, the Algarve only lost to the autonomous region of Madeira in matters of the average number of nights spent by tourists in accommodation establishments. In 2023, tourists spent an average of 4.58 nights in Madeira, 3.97 in the Algarve, and merely 1.91 nights in Northern Portugal.
