97 percent of law firm respondents in a survey said that they were using video meeting apps in order to work remotely from home during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. As noted by the source, this suggests a huge swing in favor of such tools, with 74 percent of respondents having started using video meeting apps only after the pandemic was announced in March 2020.
Major global events have sped up technology adoption
The adoption of technology within legal services has been heavily influenced and, on occasions, accelerated by major global events. Examples include the 2008 financial crisis, with firms forced to adopt new strategies and processes in response to the widespread demand for better value from corporate clients following the recession. More recently, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020 has raised serious questions about the way in which legal services are delivered, with technology likely to be a key part of any changes we may see within companies, courts, or the classroom.
Legal technology and COVID-19
The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic brought about new challenges for the way in which legal services are provided. Restrictions on movement meant client and partner meetings had to move online, with video meeting applications becoming a commonly used tool during the pandemic. Many lawyers have also moved to signing legal documents electronically on a consistent basis, as well as holding “virtual” court hearings. More than a decade after the financial crisis, the global pandemic is once again forcing the legal services industry to rethink the way in which it operates.
