In 2022, four percent of e-waste generated in southern Africa was documented as formally collected and recycled. This was the highest share throughout Africa. The overall collection for recycling in Africa stood at 0.7 percent. That year, e-waste generation in Africa amounted to 3.6 million metric tons.
Despite their low local collection rates, many developed nations send their e-waste to Africa, often illegally.
