The transatlantic slave trade saw more than 1.1 million slaves sail from Africa and disembark in the French Caribbean between the 17th and mid-19th centuries. Almost seventy percent of all slaves were transported to Saint-Domingue, with the vast majority arriving in the 18th century. Over three hundred thousand slaves disembarked in Martinique, Guadeloupe or French Guiana; all three of which remain overseas regions of France in 2020.
Haiti
The colony of Saint-Domingue was the world's largest producer of sugarcane and coffee towards the end of the 1700s, and the most prosperous colony in the French empire. During the French Revolution, an armed uprising led by French army general Toussaint Louverture resulted in a twelve year revolution that would eventually see Saint-Domingue become the Republic of Haiti. Haiti was the first independent nation established by former-slaves, the first nation to permanently abolish slavery, and the second independent nation in the Americas (after the United States).
