In 2019, the value of green bonds issued worldwide reached 272 billion U.S. dollars, up from 183 billion U.S. dollars in the previous year. Sustainable debt issuances climbed to 465 billion U.S. dollars overall in 2019. These forms of debt are relatively new debt instruments, which support environmental or social initiatives in the process of raising funds for the government or company issuing them.
