According to a survey conducted in August 2020, around 54 percent of weddings in Japan planned to be held at wedding ceremony halls in August were canceled due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak. Close to half of the wedding ceremonies scheduled in September were already called off as of August. The source estimated that the wedding ceremony industry in Japan would suffer a loss of approximately 830 billion Japanese yen in total between January and December 2020.
The Japanese government declared a state of emergency in April following a growing number of infections in the country and advised citizens to remain at home. The state was lifted in the last week of May.
