Cargo transported through the Northern Sea Route in Russia 2011-2023
The annual cargo transportation volume via the Northern Sea Route (NRS) increased in 2023. The figure reached roughly 36.3 million tons in the latest year under consideration.
The Northern Sea Route runs from the Bering Strait to the Barents Sea, where Russia borders with Norway. Ships sailing through this passage save approximately seven to 10 days on the way, which significantly increased both the importance of the NRS and its profitability.
