Number of granted family reunification residence permits in Sweden 2018-2023

The total number of residence permits granted for family reunification in Sweden decreased from 2018 to 2022, before increasing slightly again in 2023. Whereas nearly 45,000 permits were granted in 2018, 25,000 were granted in 2023. In 2023, around 23,000 of the residence permits granted on the grounds of family reunification in Sweden came under the category other grounds. Meanwhile, 2,100 were granted on refugee or asylum grounds. The most common ground for receiving a residence permit in Sweden in 2023 was work-related permits.

The numbers refers to residence permits granted in first instance (The Swedish Migration Agency and Swedish embassies abroad), and in higher instances (The Migration Courts and the Migration Court of Appeal).

The numbers show first-time decisions, applicants with a temporary residence permit who are granted an extension of this are not included."
