In a survey conducted across India in April and May 2020, approximately 89 percent of urban households were unable to pay the next month's rent due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The inability to pay the following month's rent also affected rural households of the country the most, with approximately 65 percent of the households affected. In general, the economic impact on the livelihoods among urban households was higher than that on rural households during the survey period.
