According to a series of surveys conducted by GEM Partners in 2020, the share of people in Japan who thought that it was absolutely necessary to refrain from watching movies at theaters during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic decreased from 70 percent in April to 18 percent in December. During the same time period, the share of people who thought that it was not at all necessary to exert self-restraint increased from one to five percent.
