According to a survey conducted in February 2020, close to 34 percent of respondents in Japan spent less than 100 thousand Japanese yen on reciprocal gifts given to the attendees at funeral services for their deceased family members, which was the most common amount of spending. About seven percent spent more than one million yen for gifts. In a customary procedure of funeral services in Japan, attendees provide condolatory money to the family, and the family gives gifts in return to show gratitude for attendance.
