Rail freight carloads in the United States peaked in 2014 but have steadily dropped over the period thereafter, with the exception of 2018, which recorded a temporary increase in carloads.

Monthly rail carloads are estimated by dividing the weekly sum by seven (seven days in a week) and are then adjusted according to the number of days in the month (31 days for May, 30 days for June, etc.)
