Distance traveled by rail in the U.S. before and following Covid-19 outbreak 2019–20
Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak in early 2020, passenger rail miles traveled in the U.S. fluctuated depending on the time of year. Following the global pandemic, these figures dropped to below 235 billion passenger rail miles, with the lowest figure recorded in April 2020. At 213.2 billion, May saw an increase in terms of passenger rail travel compared with April; however, the figure recorded was still considerably lower than in May 2019.
