According to a survey conducted by GEM Partners in Japan in July 2020, around 45 percent of respondents claimed that the time they spent on domestic travel with overnight stays decreased a lot amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Only one percent perceived a high increase in time spent on overnight travel. Following the global outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020, the Japanese government declared a state of emergency from April until the end of May. Citizens were advised to remain at home and refrain from unnecessary travels.
