According to a survey conducted by GEM Partners in Japan in July 2020, the majority of respondents perceived a decrease in time spent on eating out and drinking parties (nomikai) amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, out of which around 36 percent claimed that their time use decreased a lot. Following the global outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020, the Japanese government declared a state of emergency from April until the end of May. Citizens were advised to remain at home and refrain from going outside unnecessarily.
