In June 2021, the subscription video-on-demand (SVoD) service Globoplay reported having approximately 30 million subscribers, up from four million in January 2020. This represents an annual increase of 650 percent.
What is GloboPlay?
Globoplay is part of Globo Comunicação e Participações S.A., the same company responsible for the free TV channel Globo, the pay-TV content service Globosat, and the Globo.com websites. Therefore, it is also part of the conglomerate known as Grupo Globo, based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Globoplay's catalog includes the programming of Globo's free-to-air network, the most viewed in Brazil, as well as international and original productions.
Streaming in Brazil
This Portuguese-speaking country is a fan of video streaming. It had the largest number of SVoD subscribers in Latin America as of September 2020, surpassing Mexico and Argentina altogether. The consumption of VoD is part of the Brazilian online culture. According to a survey carried out earlier that year, about three-fourths of the respondents in Brazil said they used the internet to watch videos.
