Energy projects can be financed by banks, through direct funding, or by investments of companies active in the energy sector. Although renewable energies were financed by French banks up to almost 12 billion euros in 2016 and 2017, fossil energies still attracted the highest funding. During those years, oil and gas notably accounted for 63 percent of all the energy financing.
