A significant proportion of HBO Now subscribers did not upgrade to HBO Max upon its release in May 2020. The results of a survey show that 29 percent of subscribers to HBO Now did not switch to HBO Max. Despite benefits such as more content and original content for the same subscription cost, HBO Max remains unavailable on devices such as Roku and Amazon Fire TV.

Based on a cohort of Reelgood users who initiated streaming on HBO Now two weeks before the launch of HBO Max (May 13 to 26 2020) and who also initiated playback on either HBO Now or HBO Max two weeks after the launch (May 28 to July 2).
