Almost eight million internal passports for Russian citizens were issued in 2022, roughly 500,000 more than in the previous year. Furthermore, over five million external passports were issued to Russians. An external passport in Russia is a necessary identification document to be able to travel abroad, while an internal ID is obligatory for every citizen aged 14 years and above.
