As of 2022/2023, the export volume of maize and its products in South Africa was almost 3.2 million metric tons, a drop from the previous year of around 21.8 percent. Between 2000 to 2023, fluctuations in the export volume can be observed, with two significant reductions in 2006/2007 and 2015/2016.
Between 2015 to 2016, maize exports dropped by approximately 60 percent compared to 2014 and 2015, which can be attributed to a drought causing South Africa to import maize. The reason for the most recent drop in 2019/2020 can also be linked to dry weather.
