Consumption of processed maize in South Africa 2001 to 2020
In 2019/2020, the consumption of processed maize in South Africa was approximately 5.2 million metric tons, which was an increase of roughly1.6 percent compared to 2018/2019. The largest increase in consumption can be observed between 2007/2008 and 2008/2009, where the consumption increased by approximately 18 percent reaching 4.5 million metric tons. This can possibly be linked to the global recession, which had a negative impact on the South African economy but led to an increase in the local demand for maize. Recently maize consumption has been gradually and steadily increasing.
