The majority of Mexicans believed their level of spending in cruises, and out-of-home entertainment would decrease over the next two weeks in comparison to their normal spending, according to a survey carried out in March 2021. Other categories such as accessories and jewelry were also expected to experience a decline by approximately three quarters of respondents. In turn, less than one out of ten Mexicans surveyed expected to have a decrease in groceries expenditure, while 22 percent believed expenses with this type of product would increase. On February 29, 2020 the first two cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Mexico were reported. As a result of the outbreak, the government installed a federal lockdown mandate known as 'Jornada de sana distancia', which was in place between March 23 and May 20, 2020.
