In 2017, the global production of plastics for packaging amounted to 146 million metric tons, thus this was the industrial sector generating the highest plastic demand of any sector. Plastics were also massively produced to supply the building and construction sector, which came in second place for plastic demand that year, at 65 million metric tons worldwide.
