As of November 2019, around 15 percent of male Japanese respondents were consuming an amount of alcohol that can increase the risk of lifestyle diseases, while about nine percent of female respondents were consuming a high-risk amount of alcohol. Following the national health promotion plan announced in 2012, the Japanese government has been trying to reduce the high-risk alcohol consumption rate to 13 percent for men and 6.4 percent for women.
