Russians on payment method of choice for food delivery in 2020, by type

In 2020, 35 percent of the respondents revealed having paid for food delivery services online using their bank cards, while over a quarter of the polled audience preferred offline payments by card. A relatively lower share of participants reported cash employment for such purposes.

Food delivery and e-grocery sales in Russia

Over the last years, both the e-grocery and food delivery sectors skyrocketed in Russia, as the number of online food orders nearly doubled and the online grocery segment rose 135 billion Russian rubles in turnover in 2020. In that year, the Russian capital recorded 185 thousand daily food deliveries and was projected to account for nearly 82 billion Russian rubles in online food sales. Nevertheless, the highest average receipt value was recorded in Samara, the eighth-largest city in the country and the third-most populated in the Volga Federal District.

The digitalization of grocery shopping worldwide

The number of consumers shopping online for groceries has gradually increased in the past years. In the United States, the e-grocery sector was gaining market share even before the pandemic and was estimated to account for 21.5 percent of the total share by 2025. Online food retail escalated in the United Kingdom as well, with an average value of weekly online sales reaching 357 million British pounds during the third quarter of 2020. However, despite the temporary setback caused by the pandemic and a significant drop in orders, the worldwide leader in the food delivery market is China, where e-grocery is favored by nearly 40 percent of the population.
