According to the survey conducted from November 2019 to February 2020 among 54,580 Chinese college students, 77.28 percent of respondents defined themselves as heterosexual. Meanwhile, around 8.92 percent of respondents were looking for same-sex partners. About 0.6 percent of students said they were asexual, who generally lack sexual attraction to others.
Breakdown of sexual orientation among university students in China in 2020, by type
Respondents were from 1,764 higher education institutions across 34 provinces in China, including Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.
68.07 percent respondents were from universities offering Bachelor’s degrees, and 31.93 percent from higher vocational education institutes.
59.67 percent at their first year, 22.59 percent at their second year, 11.11 percent at their third year and 6.54 percent at their fourth year.
34.2 percent were biologically male and 65.8 percent were biologically female.
