In 2020, Hungarians informed themselves about political and public matters mostly from the television, more specifically, by watching the RTL Klub and TV2 channels, as 30 and 25 percent of Hungarians watched them daily in order to get information about current political events. At the same time, a further 57 percent of Hungarians accessed the internet on a regular basis to consume political news.
Trust in news
Hungarians were more likely to trust information they had acquired from friends and acquaintances than information originating from any news media, according to the findings of a study realized in 2019. Nevertheless, when it comes to mass media, Hungarians trusted radio news programs and local daily papers the most.
The first solely reader-founded news portal
In the summer of 2020, nearly the complete editorial staff of Hungary’s leading independent news portal, Index.hu, resigned as a response to government pressure. This gave way to the launch of the very first entirely crowd-founded news portal, Telex.hu, operated by the former workers of Index.hu.
