In the financial year 2022, nearly four percent of the net area in India was under organic farming, an increase from last year. In general, the area under organic farming has increased continuously, signifying more demand for organic food.

Organic farming worldwide

Australia dominated the agricultural land area for organic farming by a large margin, with India ranking second in 2022. The south Asian country, however, led in terms of number of producers, followed by Uganda and Thailand, contributing to the worldwide organic food sales of more than 134 billion U.S. dollars.

How India promotes organic farming

The Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) was established in 2015 to support and promote organic farming, specifically focused on soil health, including financially assisting farmers. Among several other public initiatives that are region-focused, the push towards agritech has been significant, with a strong startup ecosystem across the country, potentially boosting the entire farming sector – one that is crucial in employing millions of Indians.
