According to a survey conducted in December 2019 in Japan, just below 39 percent of non-smokers stated that they would tolerate smokers if they smoke only in designated areas. Less than one third of respondents claimed to not tolerate smokers in any way following the amended passive smoking regulations in the Health Promotion Act.
The amendments to the Health Promotion Act in Japan started in July 2018 and was scheduled to be completed by April 2020 prior to the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The bill prohibits smoking in public facilities, offices as well as most restaurants and public areas.
