Between March and April 2020, mobile users in Italy dramatically reduced their visits to groceries and pharmacies, as well as visits to retail and recreation facilities during the coronavirus (COVID-19) emergency. This scenario improved gradually during the months of May and June, when the lockdown was lifted. In June 2020, data collected from applications using location trackers revealed that visits to retail and recreation facilities were on average 18 percent lower than those registered in January 2020. Similarly, visits to grocery stores and pharmacies were 12 percent lower.

Retail & recreation includes places like restaurants, cafes, shopping centers, theme parks, museums, libraries, and movie theaters. Grocery and pharmacy includes places like grocery markets, food warehouses, farmers markets, specialty food shops, drug stores, and pharmacies.
