In 2018, the share of fully immunized female children living in the rural areas in India was 59.7 percent. Comparatively, the share of fully immunized males living in rural areas in India was slightly lower with 57.1 percent in 2018.
Immunization coverage
In India, there still exist a relatively large proportion of children and infants that die, owing to lack of access of safe vaccines and medical healthcare facilities. Despite significant improvements witnessed over the last two decades relative to immunization coverage against certain vaccines such as polio, India still lags behind its global peers as far as full vaccine coverage with regard to vaccine-preventable disease goes.
Challenges
India faces several limitations with regard to implementing programs relative to achieving universal healthcare including the Intensified Mission Indradhanush launched in 2017 to accelerate and improve vaccination coverage by 2030. Apart from disparities seen in immunization coverage relative to wealth quintile, and rural-urban areas, one of the gravest challenges the country faces are the mother’s access and exposure to a nearby healthcare facility and the lack of medical trained professionals.
