The total daily capacity of operational gas pipelines worldwide reached some 119.5 million barrels of oil equivalent in 2020. The United States has the largest gas pipeline capacity of any country worldwide, at some 37.2 million barrels of oil equivalent.
Pipeline transportation is used to move gaseous or liquid products from their production or extraction site to refineries and ultimately to end consumers. Pipelines used for the transportation of pressurized natural gas are made from carbon steel.
