Approval of the legalization of same-sex marriages South Korea 2001-2023
According to a survey conducted in 2023, around 40 percent of respondents in South Korea agreed to legalize same-sex marriage. This figure has been steadily increasing since 2001. In February 2023, a South Korean court ruled for the first time that same-sex couples can receive national health spousal coverage like different-sex couples.
Social perceptions of LGBTQ+ rights
While about 51 percent of respondents from the same survey still disapproved of legalizing same-sex marriage, younger generations showed greater acceptance, contrasting with traditional views. Notably, individuals in their twenties and thirties supported same-sex marriage legalization. Additionally, a 2021 survey indicated that almost 40 percent of respondents believed in respecting the social rights of LGBTQ individuals, even if legal and institutional recognition may not be possible. This social evolution reflects a shift towards inclusivity, challenging historical norms, and fostering a more tolerant society.
Shifting perspectives: Evolving views on sexuality
Overall, attitudes towards love and sexuality are evolving, with some sexual behaviors now viewed more positively and fostering a sex-positive environment. In a recent survey, approximately six percent of respondents identified as LGBTQ+, indicating growing recognition and acceptance of diverse sexual orientations. Furthermore, around seven percent of people reported having some form of everyday life exposure to a homosexual relative, friend, or colleague, contributing to increased societal understanding and tolerance.
