A study from December 2020 analyzed the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on international and domestic tourist spending in Italy from 2020 to 2024. It presented three alternative scenarios. According to the baseline scenario, total tourist spending would experience a drop of 95 billion euros in 2020 over the previous year. Then, the international tourist spending would return to the 2019 level only by 2022.
The upside scenario, which considers a faster recovery, forecast a decrease of 82 billion euros in 2020. Finally, the downside scenario, supposing a slower recovery, estimated a decrease of 120 billion euros in 2020. The source specifies that all the scenarios considered that it was not possible to take international travels from China since January 2020 as well as from Japan and South Korea since February 2020.
