Many of the biggest polluters in the European Union are coal-fired power plants. Poland's Bełchatów lignite-fired power plant was the biggest emitter in 2023, having produced 26.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂). Bełchatów power plant has consistently been the EU's biggest polluter over the past decade. The total emissions produced by these five power plants decreased by more than 40 percent between 2013 and 2023, to 83 MtCO₂.
