The state of Rhode Island has taken part in all U.S. presidential elections ever conducted, except for the first election in 1789. Of these 58 elections, Rhode Island has awarded all of its electoral votes to the nationwide winner on forty occasions, which gives a success rate of 69 percent. In contested elections, Rhode Island has always sided with a major party candidate, voting Republican 21 times (mostly between 1856 and 1924) and Democratic 23 times (mostly since 1828). In the past few decades, Democratic candidates have won the Ocean State with margins between 15 and 30 percent, and in 2020, Joe Biden won the popular vote by a 21 percent margin.
As of the 2020 election, no U.S. president or major party nominee has ever come from the state of Rhode Island. Throughout most of U.S. history, Rhode Island was designated four electoral votes in presidential elections, apart from during the 1910s and 1920s when this was increased to five; however, due to current population trends, Rhode Island is on track to lose one of its electoral votes, which would give it just three votes for the first time in its history.
