Since its admission to the union in 1912, New Mexico has taken part in all U.S. presidential elections. In these 28 elections, New Mexico has sided with the winning candidate 25 times, giving a success rate of 89 percent. The Land of Enchantment has allocated all of its electoral votes to major party candidates in each of these elections, siding with the Democratic nominee 16 times, and the Republican nominee on twelve occasions. Despite being a swing or battleground state throughout most of its history, the past three elections have seen New Mexico gradually become more of a blue state, with the Democratic winning margins ranging between eight and 15 percent of the popular vote. In the 2020 election, Joe Biden won the popular vote by an eleven percent margin.
As of 2020, no major party candidate has ever been born in or resided in New Mexico. New Mexico's allocation of electoral college votes has gradually grown over its history, from just three in early years, to four from the 1940s, and then five since the 1980s.
