Nearly all railway lines in use were electrified in Switzerland and Luxembourg in 2022, making them the front-runners in electric rail services on the European continent. Switzerland's electrification rate reached 99.8 percent, while Luxembourg's electrification rate was 96.7 percent. The EU-27 average stood at 56.9 percent in 2022. In total, usable railway lines in the EU-27 had a combined length of 202,131 kilometers in 2022.
Luxembourg leads rail investment
Luxembourg came out on top of a list of European countries and their respective rail investment per capita. In 2023, Luxembourgish authorities spent 512 euros per citizen for railway infrastructure purposes. By comparison, Germany’s rail network, had only seen 115 euros per citizen invested.
