Breakdown of monthly spending on food per capita in urban areas Indonesia 2024
As at March 2024, approximately 16.44 percent of the monthly per capita expenditure on food in urban areas in Indonesia was spent on prepared food and beverages. By way of comparison, about 3.49 percent of the monthly per capita expenditure on food in urban areas in Indonesia was spent on vegetables.
Food trends in Indonesia
The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic seems to have been an eye-opener for most Indonesian consumers to become more health-conscious. This shift in consumer behavior is reflected in their current eating habits, trending toward healthier food and better nutrition. More and more Indonesians are adopting a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle to be healthy and live longer. Demand for organic food products that were previously considered expensive has also shown a steady increase in recent years. People are increasingly willing to spend more money on products that are considered healthier. In 2022, the consumption value of organic packaged food and beverages in Indonesia reached approximately 17.2 million U.S. dollars and was projected to reach 20.5 million U.S. dollars by 2025.
Sustainable consumption
Indonesian consumers are increasingly environmentally responsible when shopping and willing to pay more for green products. They show a higher commitment to sustainability throughout every aspect of their shopping journey in efforts to reduce their carbon footprints. Apart from buying from local producers and farmers, Indonesian consumers also seek to buy food products with biodegradable packaging, avoid food wastage, and bring refills or reusable items when shopping for food products.
