Some of the world's major investment banks have provided the leading coal mining companies with billions of dollars in finance since 2016. Of these banks, Industrial Bank had provided around 23.5 billion U.S. dollars. However, their investment has decreased over the years , dropping from 4.05 billion U.S. dollars in 2017 to 3.02 billion in 2023. Some of the biggest investors in coal mining companies are based in China, where almost 51 percent of global coal production occurred in 2023.
