Sustainability of supermarkets according to customers in the Netherlands 2019-2020
Consumers in the Netherlands gave smaller supermarket chains a higher sustainability rating in 2019 than the industry's market leaders. Plus was perceived as the most sustainable supermarket in the Netherlands in both 2019 and 2020. The supermarket chain received a grade of 7.37 in 2020. Respondents to a widespread survey were asked to grade several supermarket brands in the Netherlands on their sustainability, on a scale from 1 to 10. Spar came in second place in 2020, with a grade of 7.3. By comparison, market leader Albert Heijn and the second supermarket of the Netherlands Jumbo both had grades that were less than seven, although still above-average. Overall, however, supermarkets in the Netherlands were perceived to be less sustainable in 2020 than in the year before.
