Number of companies in clothing retail having physical stores in Sweden 2010-2019

While there were nearly six thousand companies in clothing retail trade who mainly sell in physical stores registered in Sweden in 2011, the number fell by almost two thousand in the following years. As of 2019, the number of businesses in this sector amounted to 3,921. By comparison, that same year, there were only 591 companies in footwear retail trade with mostly physical stores reported.

Bankruptcies and new start-ups

In the past years, the number of new start-ups in the clothing industry in Sweden was higher than the number of bankruptcies. From 2010 to 2019, the number of insolvent companies in the clothing industry fluctuated slightly. After peaking at 197 in 2013, the number of bankruptcies recorded in the sector in 2019 decreased to 105. On the other hand, the number of newly founded start-up decreased from 588 in 2010 to 227 start-ups in 2018.  

Leading clothing companies in Sweden

  Among the companies operating in the Swedish clothing and fashion retail trade industry, H&M led the revenue ranking. As of January 2020, the multinational fashion retailer generated a revenue of around 210 billion Swedish kroner. Axel Johnson Holding Ab followed, ahead of Cirkce K Sverige AB.
