Hawaii has taken part in 16 U.S presidential elections, and has sided with the winning candidate in ten of these, giving a success rate of 63 percent. Hawaii has voted for the Democratic nominee in 14 elections, and the only times where the Republican nominees won were in 1972 and 1984, where Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan respectively won re-election in landslide victories. In the 2020 election, Joe Biden carried the state with a near thirty percent margin in the popular vote.
Hawaii's native son
Barack Obama, the youngest living U.S. president, is the only POTUS to have been born in Hawaii; as of the 2020 election, he is the only president or major party candidate to have been born there, and the only president not born on the U.S. mainland. Obama won his home state with over seventy percent of the popular vote in 2008 and 2012.
Electoral votes
After being admitted to the union in 1959, Hawaii was allocated three electoral votes for the 1960 election, however this was increased to four in each subsequent election and it is expected to stay at this number in the 2024 election.
