COVID-19: effect on number of sporting events worldwide 2020, by month
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 hit the sports industry hard - many professional leagues across the globe suspended their seasons and hundreds of thousands of jobs were put at risk as public sporting events across the world were cancelled. Analysis suggests that 26,424 sporting events would be held in December 2020, significantly lower than the original projection of almost 50 thousand events that were to be held in the same month before the crisis hit.
