Owning a pet is a rather common practice in Italy. The way one acquires a pet, however, can differ from owner to owner. Some prefer to buy puppies at specialized stores, others would rather adopt them and in some cases one becomes a pet-owner by means of a gift. A survey conducted on pet-owners who were also veterinaries' clients revealed that, in 2019, 29 percent of them purchased their pet. This figure was more or less stable from 2007 to 2019, always fluctuating around a value of 30 percent. However, there was a decrease in 2017, when the share of pet-owners who purchased their pet dropped to 24 percent.
